ASX in the Community
Community
The Australian Securities Exchange is actively engaged in the community in which we live, through our community partnerships program. ASX's community investments have the following objectives:
- To support our employees in the communities in which we live
- To balance local and national community activities
- To increase opportunities for volunteering
- To contribute to community trust by acting as a responsible corporate citizen.
To this end, ASX's community investment is delivered through a variety of channels:
Workplace Giving
ASX employees donate to 35 different charities through workplace giving and ASX matches these donations on a dollar for dollar basis. In 2007, ASX and it's employess donated just over $120,000 to charity through this channel.
Corporate Volunteering
ASX provides one day's paid leave each year for its people to volunteer with our community partners. Most recently, ASX staff have volunteered with the following organisations:
- Australian Red Cross Blood Bank
- Good Start Breakfast Club (Alexandria Park Community School)
- Salvation Army
- Landcare
- Inspire Youth Foundation
Key Partnerships:
- Taronga Zoo
ASX continues to support the cause of animal and environmental conservation through it's sponsorship of the Australian Marine Mammal Research Centre at Taronga Zoo. ASX and Reuters are partners in this leading financial markets fundraising organisation, whichin 2007 raised $1.3 million. This funds were distributed to 29 different charities. For more information please see www.asxreuterscharity.com.au - Research Australia
ASX is a foundation member of Research Australia, which reflects our commitment to health and medical research. In 2007, we reinvigorated our partnership with Research Australia, by agreeing to house and fully support it's Sydney Operations for a period of two years. Corporate Responsibility
ASX is committed to operating as an ethical, responsive leader in an increasingly competitive and complex marketplace. ASX recognises that an ethical corporation needs to deliver responsible community investment for all of it's stakeholders. ASX's corporate responsibility activities are currently focused on assessing our impact on the environment, engaging through our community program, communicating to our employees, and our ongoing governance-related activities.
Environment
ASX recognises that our activities have an impact on the environment. ASX has recently reviewed it's environmental policy from a risk perspective, and is continually monitoring it's environmental and carbon impacts against this policy. ASX is also a constituent of two leading Sustainable Investment Indices, the Dow Jones Sustainable Investment Index and the FTSE4Good Index.
ASX will complete it's first assessment in the international Carbon Disclosure Project in June 2008. ASX is also monitoring closely the development of an emissions trading market in Australia and will be making a specific product offering in that sector. On a company wide level, ASX is committed to continuous improvement of its reporting process of it's environmental impact, and also committed to reductions of such impacts.
