MEDIA RELEASE

ANZ today announced the appointment of Mr Shane Freeman as Head of
People Capital reporting to Mr John McFarlane, Chief Executive
Officer.

People Capital is ANZ's strategic human resources function concerned
with overseeing its people agenda and building its intellectual
capital. This includes the major practice areas of leadership, talent
and training, performance and rewards, employee relations and
internal communications.

Mr Freeman joins ANZ from BHP where he was Global Practice Leader
Organisational Effectiveness. Previously he was General Manager,
Global Human Resources Shared Services at National Australia Bank and
Director of Corporate Services during a 17-year career at Mobil.

Mr Freeman holds a Bachelor of Behavioural Sciences from LaTrobe
University.

ANZ Chief Executive Officer Mr John McFarlane said Mr Freeman brought
outstanding experience in human resources practice and organisational
transformation to ANZ.

"One of our aspirations is to lead and inspire our people and to
create an open environment based on trust, integrity, freedom and
recognition," Mr McFarlane said.

"Shane's background will help ensure ANZ is well positioned to
achieve its strategic objectives, and to perform, grow and breakout,"
he said.

Mr Freeman's appointment follows Ms Elizabeth Proust taking up the
role of Managing Director Metrobanking earlier this year.

Mr Freeman takes up his position on 20 August 2001.
