New Zealand electricity

ASX New Zealand electricity futures and options are standardised and centrally cleared financial contracts. They are structured as cash-settled Contracts for Difference (CFD) against two grid reference nodes (Otahuhu and Benmore) in the New Zealand electricity market.

ASX New Zealand electricity futures and options provide a robust mechanism for companies with interest in or exposure to the New Zealand electricity market to anonymously manage their price and counterparty risks.

Types of New Zealand electricity futures and options:

  • Base load futures (Monthly, Quarterly, Strip)
  • Peak load futures (Quarterly)
  • Average rate options over base load quarterly futures
  • Calendar year strip options over base load quarterly futures

Base load futures

1. Otahuhu - 1MW of electricity per hour based on a base load profile at the Otahuhu grid reference point in New Zealand.

2. Benmore - 1MW of electricity per hour based on a base load profile at the Benmore grid reference point in New Zealand.

Peak load futures

1. Otahuhu - 1MW of electricity per hour based on a peak load profile at the Otahuhu grid reference point in New Zealand.

2. Benmore - 1MW of electricity per hour based on a peak load profile at the Benmore grid reference point in New Zealand.

Average rate options (Base load)

Options over the Base Load Quarter Electricity Futures Products: 1 MW of electrical energy per hour on a Base load profile for the OTA & BEN nodes over the duration of a calendar quarter.

Strip options (Base load)

Options over the Calendar Year Base Load Strip Futures Products: 1 MW of electrical energy per hour on a Base load profile for the OTA & BEN nodes over the duration of a calendar quarter.
