Australia has long been a nation with a very strong interest in investing in property, Australia's largest investment asset class. The range of property related products on ASX includes A-REITS (formerly known as Listed Property Trusts) and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).

A-REITs (Listed Property)

A-REITs allow investors to purchase an interest in a professionally managed portfolio of real estate, that is usually diversified across a property class or a range of classes not readily accessible to most individual investors. Income earned through the collection of rent flows through to the end investors. A-REITs may offer tax advantages to some investors. Before making an investment decision, investors should seek appropriate advice in this regard to determine if it is appropriate for their individual circumstances.

A-REITs can include

  • Industrial property
  • Leisure, such as theme parks
  • Office towers
  • Retail, such as shopping centres

Exchange Traded Funds

The Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) over the A-REIT sector tracks the performance and composition of the S&P/ASX 200 A-REIT Index which comprises the largest A-REITs listed on ASX.

In addition to being low cost, ETFs can provide instant diversification across the listed property sector.
