Holding shares in CHESS

The two ways shareholders can register legal title to CHESS approved securities are on the CHESS subregister or issuer sponsored subregister. The entire holdings of the two electronic subregisters make up the principal register of all shareholdings for a particular company.

Some securities issued by ASX listed companies are still only issued in certificated form (non-electronic), that is a holder's legal title is evidenced by a paper certificate. These securities are not CHESS approved, which means transactions in these securities cannot be settled or cleared through CHESS. Irrespective of how you hold or intend to hold your securities, you will always need to trade through a broker.
