Welcome to the latest edition of the Grain Futures Update. ASX sends this newsletter each month to keep you informed about news and events that may be of interest to you.

February was another solid month for the ASX Grain Futures market, with 435,140 tonnes traded. Grain futures trading has exceeded 400,000 tonnes each month for the last three months (PDF 123KB). This is the first time this has happened since the drought market in 2007 and represents 53% growth on the corresponding quarter in 2007/2008.

The proposed contract specification (PDF 82KB) for Western Australia wheat futures and options has been finalised and is awaiting regulatory clearance. The ASX code for the proposed new contract offering will be WAW. ASX intends to list the futures and options contracts in May 2009, however, the actual listing date will be advised in due course once regulatory clearance has been obtained and systems testing and relevant agreements have been finalised.

As has been detailed in the attached contract specification for Western Australia wheat, it is proposed that the trading hours for ASX Grain Futures  be changed in conjunction with the listing of the new contract offering. It is envisaged that the proposed new trading hours will maximise on-screen trading activity as well as service industry participants throughout Australia and Asia.

For those interested in following the ASX Grain Futures market and would like the data delivered to your inbox, ASX provides a Daily Activity Report (PDF 160KB) which details the market activity for the preceeding trading day. If you would like to be added to the list and benefit from the price transparency and market information contact ASX.

Charting ASX Grain Futures contracts is now possible on the ASX website. The static historical charts for new crop contract months will still be supplied and updated on a monthly basis. More information on charts.

ASX will be running education workshops on grain futures and options in the first half of 2009. Anyone interested in attending a full day workshop is encouraged to contact ASX.
