The ASX Corporate Governance Council
Recognising the importance of corporate governance in the context of global markets, ASX accepted aleadership role in enhancing Australian corporate governance practices by convening the ASX Corporate Governance Council in August 2002 (Council).
The Council undertook a wide-ranging work program and identified a number of activities as part of its role, including:
- Producing corporate governance guidelines for listed entities;
- Assisting to build understanding about corporate governance practices on the part of listed companies;
- Reviewing the legislative and Rules framework for Australian Corporate Governance practices;
- Providing information about corporate governance to investors and the wider community; and
- Regularly reviewing the disclosure of corporate governance practices of listed entities to promote a high standard of transparency.
The overriding objective of the Council was to develop and deliver an industry-wide, flexible framework for corporate governance that could provide a practical guide for listed companies, to enable them to improve their existing corporate governance practices.
The Council brings together 21 different business, shareholder and industry groups, each offering valuable guidance and information specific to their constituencies and industry.
