ASX Small to Mid Caps - accessing international investment

ASX initiated international investor events designed to showcase Australian small to mid cap companies.

ASX and Australian equity markets

The Australian market is one of the most efficient, liquid, well-regulated and diverse equity markets in Asia Pacific. With over 2,000 listed companies and a market capitalisation of more than A$1.6 trillion it attracts international investment from every corner of the globe.  Much of this attention is understandably focused on the ASX 200 and in particular the well-known resource, technology and banking stocks, but what of the many small and mid cap stocks that represent the BHPs and Westpacs of tomorrow?

Interviews with the CEOs from such companies revealed a common frustration – a lack of quality and cost-effective international investor events for small and mid cap companies designed to showcase their companies and tell their stories.  These frustrations are also often compounded by a lack of broker research making it next to impossible to attract suitable foreign investors.

United by a common goal

The international desks of ASX Broker Participants have come together with the Australian Securities Exchange and Austrade to deliver a series of international investor events designed to showcase Australian small to mid cap companies. The aim is to make these events as inclusive as possible, whilst ensuring there is a match between the investment profiles of the companies attending and the investment demands of the international institutional attendees. Invitations to attend are made on the basis of recommendations from a panel of domestic and international brokers and investment banks.

The first of these events was held at the Grand Hyatt in New York in March this year. Twenty companies presented to over 130 US investors and a series of one-on-one meetings between CEOs and investors were held over the two days of the event.  Feedback from the companies, investors and brokers was excellent with all parties agreeing to replicate the event in Europe and Asia and to gradually expand the program into multiple streams allowing more ASX listed companies the opportunity to participate. Further details of this first New York event can be found at the event website.

The dates and venues for future events are as follows:

  • Four Seasons, Hong Kong - 16-17 October 2008 (presenting company registrations are now closed for the HK event)
  • Grand Hyatt, New York - 26-27 February 2009
  • The Mayfair, London - 19-20 March 2009

More information on the Hong Kong event can be found in the upcoming events section of this newsletter.
