ASX Australian Investor Study 2020

A unique insight into trends shaping the investment markets and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic

Mapping the evolution of Australian investing

Since 1986, the ASX Australian Investor Study has been an authoritative guide to changing investor behaviour.

Our 2020 study is an in-depth analysis of investor attitudes, behaviour and decision-making – shortly before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Investing in 2020 - the state of the market

Australia continues to be a nation of investors with close to 9 million adult Australians holding investments outside their super and primary dwelling.

More than half have investments in direct shares and there has been an increase of new investors. Close to a quarter of all investors have started investing in the past 2 years and women are now making up 45% of all new investors.

The impact of COVID-19

In general, investors have reacted to the COVID-19 induced market volatility with some sophistication. Retirees and pre-retirees have been forced to rethink their plans or lower their lifestyle expectations, and younger investors have responded by expanding and diversifying their portfolios. Many investors indicate that they are more open to accepting short-term volatility on the way to long-term goals. Yet they have also become more focused on diversification and risk management, as they seek to build sustainable portfolios for the future.
