NORMANDY MINING LIMITED 1998-07-21 ASX-SIGNAL-G HOMEX - Adelaide +++++++++++++++++++++++++ EXPLORATION Expenditure on direct interests, including mine site exploration, was $13.7 million. GOLD AUSTRALIA At Pajingo, drilling intersections at Vera South, within two main vein systems, included 6.7m at 28.3g/t and 3.8m at 22.5g/t. Resource estimates have commenced. In the Vera Deeps position, an intersection (3.2m at 8.9g/t) 100m below the presently planned bottom of the Vera decline confirmed continuation of the mineralised structure. Drilling continued on other vein targets in the Pajingo area, with numerous minor intersections recorded. At Kalgoorlie Operations, RC drilling confirmed significant resource positions in the Oroya cutback of the Super Pit. Intersections included 43m at 3.6g/t in Australia East No.3 Lens and 46m at 5.7g/t in No. 2 East Lode. In the Horseshoe area, an intersection of 64m at 3.4g/t was recorded in No.3 West Lode. Drilling continued at Fimiston Underground and Mt Charlotte. At Boddington, deeper drilling at Wandoo returned further encouraging intersections. These included 108m at 1.85g/t and 0.12% copper (from 148m) and 80m at 1.1 g/t and 0.14% copper (from 284m). Modest widths of high grade mineralisation were intersected along the Wattle shear, including 3m at 44.7g/t. Further air-core drilling along the Mallee trend has indicated a continuity of oxide mineralisation southwards. In the Minjar district, drill results from Tickford (5m at 11g/t from 30m), Mt Mulgine (5m at 7.8g/t from 20m) and Warriedar (12m at 4.6g/t from 30m) require follow-up. In the Telfer district, regional geochemical drilling (1,020 holes) was completed over the Tim's Dome, East Thompson's Dome, South Camp Dome, northwest of Golden Web and in the Chicken Ranch, Turkey Farm, and Big Banana areas. Results are awaited. In the Northern Territory, Normandy has signed a joint venture agreement with Normandy NFM which consolidates 49,100 sqkm of exploration interests in Central Australia. Normandy contributed 29,500 sqkm, including Barrow Creek (notably the Kroda gold mineralisation), Reynolds Range (including the Sabre gold mineralisation) and Willowra. Normandy NFM will manage a joint exploration team utilising the expertise and data bases of both Companies. GOLD - INTERNATIONAL Exploration expenditure for the quarter by Normandy LaSource, excluding mine site exploration, was FRF16.6 million. At Perama Hill (Greece, Normandy LaSource effective 44.4%) drilling produced further high grade intersections from close to surface (89m at 7.5g/t, 129m at 5.5g/t and 107m at 4.2g/t). At Ariab (Sudan, 40%), definition drilling at Hadal Auatib North and Hadaiamet exceeded expectations. Best intercepts were 12m at 21.8g/t and 16.5m at 35.8g/t. At Wadi Gabgaba, Nubian Desert (Sudan, Normandy LaSource 55-90%), trench results included 20m at 2.55g/t and 15m at 1.95g/t on a 6km long geochemical anomaly. Reconnaissance drilling is planned to commence in the December quarter. At Tasiast (Mauritania, Normandy LaSource 100%), ongoing drilling of BIF-hosted mineralised zones intersected further high grades. Geophysical surveys have identified additional targets. At Kentau (Kazakstan, Normandy LaSource earning 61%), potential epithermal and porphyry systems were identified warranting follow-up. On the Pakirarahi project, 20km north of Waihi (New Zealand), further drilling is in progress following intersections of 69m at 1.8g/t (including 7.5m at 9.4g/t) and 141m at 1.2g/t (including 6m at 6.4g/t). Elsewhere, at Aisasjur (Irian Jaya, Normandy 50%) a four-hole diamond drill programme returned no economically significant mineralisation. At the Sibolga COW (Sumatra), IP surveys and drilling is scheduled for July-August on the Padangsidempuan Aek Kapur and Aek Pahu prospects. Agreement was reached to acquire the Gorontalo prospects, Sulawesi. In the Philippines, joint venture agreements were signed on the Manhuluyan and Digkilaan copper-gold properties in northeastern Mindanao. METALS At the Golden Grove, drilling of the interpreted faulted extension of the Scuddles orebody intersected massive sulphides (8m at 20% zinc, 3.5m at 8% zinc) 180m below the limits of the current resource model. At Gossan Hill, drilling to test the margin of Q copper lens intersected 11.9m at 4.2% copper and 1.3g/t gold. DIAMONDS At Bulman in Arnhem Land, first round fieldwork was completed on EL8437, including 172 heavy mineral diamond samples, plus stream geochemical and rock chip samples. Results are awaited. Drilling continues this field season. MORE TO FOLLOW 1
