ANZ today announced Ms Elizabeth Proust would assume responsibility
for corporate affairs, in addition to her existing role as head of
human resources and management services.

Ms Proust's new responsibilities include government and regulatory
affairs, media relations, community affairs and internal
communications.

As part of the change, ANZ has appointed Mr Gerard Brown as Head of
Government and Regulatory Affairs, reporting to Ms Proust. Mr Brown
joins ANZ from The Allen Consulting Group where he was a Principal
responsible for corporate public affairs, regulatory and public
policy management consulting. Previously Mr Brown was responsible for
corporate regulatory and external affairs for Ciba Geigy Australia
Limited, and formerly a Senior Ministerial Advisor. Mr Brown will
join ANZ on 6 April 1999.

ANZ Chief Executive Officer, Mr John McFarlane said the external
environment facing the financial services industry was particularly
challenging, making the task of meeting community interests and
obligations more complex.

"These changes are aimed at lifting our game through clear and
consistent communication. By invigorating corporate affairs
management, we will also improve ANZ's social and political
awareness, and provide greater public affairs input to decision
making," Mr McFarlane said.

"A greater focus on staff communications also allows us to keep staff
fully informed and recognises that our people are the key to creating
a better experience for customers," he said.

Ms Proust's new responsibilities as Group General Manager Corporate
Affairs and Human Resources are effective immediately.
